Football fans have mocked Cristiano Ronaldo after Lionel Messi claimed his eighth Ballon d'Or title on Monday night, with some claiming that the Argentina forward was now the 'undisputed GOAT.'
It's been an excellent year for the Inter Miami forward, who was recognised for his achievements on the pitch, having lead Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022.
The 36-year-old was also the mastermind behind their victory against France in the final, scoring twice during the match before slotting home a penalty in the resulting shoot-out. The four-time Champions League winner also impressed for Paris Saint-Germain last season, scoring a whopping 32 goals in 55 games across all competitions.
Messi has continued to impress for his new club, while Ronaldo, equally has performed well for Al-Nassr this season, with the Portuguese superstar scoring 14 goals in 14 games.
But after the Argentine's victory tonight, fans took to X to claim that the debate whether who was the greatest footballer of all time, was over. One fan wrote: 'Ronaldo fans, it's time to admit that Messi is the true GOAT of football.'
'Do you know it's possible to love Ronaldo and accept Messi has done more and achieved more than him? Messi is the undisputed GOAT let's say the truth for once,' added another.
Fans of Ronaldo even questioned Messi's victory tonight, with one writing: 'Ronaldo earned every single Ballon D’or he won but I can’t say the same for Messi, Congratulations to him.'
The Al-Nassr forward has also enjoyed a distinguished career, a European Championship, five Champions League titles and five Ballon d'Ors.
Yet some claimed that Messi should have won more Ballon d'Or titles in his career. One wrote: 'It's going to be 8-5 to Messi over Ronaldo in Ballon d'Or wins, but should be about 11-2.
'Ronaldo only won about three of his simply because Real Madrid won the Champions League. Was still brilliant obviously, but not a chance he was better than Messi, barring maybe one season.' While others claimed that both footballers should be celebrated for their contributions to the game.
'Ronaldo fans should celebrate Messi's victory; Hating on him won't help Ronaldo win the next World Cup or 3 extra Ballon d'Ors,' they wrote.
'Both players are standouts but Messi has always been miles ahead, thanks to his God-given talent. Football is a game of love, remember that. No shades.
